I SEPTEMBER 14: September brings us a talented, young designer, Sopheap Hettinga, who will provide a sneak preview of her creations for the Helen De Vos Children’s Hospital cancer research benefit event. Quoting the publicity: “Portraits in Time will feature a fashion runway show of live models and Robert Tonner Fashion Dolls dressed by evening and bridal wear designer, Sopheap Hettinga, who worked with Cynthia Rowley in New York. The event will also include a multi-art silent auction of works in the form of jewelry and quilts and many ensembles created by Sopheap for the modern woman.” While we may not be able to attend this upscale evening which includes a live music trio, champagne and hors d’oeuvres by Martha’s Vineyard, we WILL be able to get a first hand look at what “Sam” (who, in addition to her design skills, also works at Field’s in Jenison) has created. You won’t want to miss “Designing Portraits in Time” to be inspired by a wonderful yound woman choosing to share her gift with the community and children in need.
REPLAY? Well, not really, but it is our opportunity not to miss February’s cancelled program, “Lasso The Leather Look”. DanI Cain has worked for Tandy Leather Factory for many years and has acquired many skills and much knowledge when it comes to working with leather. She will share the information we need to know to make our own garments, bags, or other projects using leather as our main fabric and she will also bring some the items she has made to give us ideas. In addition, Tandy Leather will bring some of their leathers, needles, patterns, books, and catalogs for purchase to help us get started on a brand new adventure! These items will be available to ASG members at a discount so it will be a great opportunity for each of us to try our hand in a new arena. Join us in October, pardners! NOVEMBER 9: Complete this year’s theme “Kickin’ It Up A Notch” with your own example of just how you personally did that from what you learned or were inspired to sew from one of ASG’s library books, or something in your own library of books and magazines. We will present our own glorified “sew and show” entitled “Made From The Book” where each of you will have the opportunity to demonstrate the way you challenged yourself to stretch beyond what you thought you were capable of to produce something - anything - intriguing and appealing. We eagerly anticipate being wowed by the way you’ve chosen to kick it up. Who knows who you will inspire to continue advancing the sewing skills in our own guild and also in the larger metropolitan Grand Rapids sewing community. So, sew and shine, ASG members, sew and shine! DECEMBER: No meeting scheduled this month!
